This refers to “A prison for Mr Husain?” (March 25). Those who write or speak in favour of Husain should not forget that their views may not be acceptable to even those who are against violent attacks and vandalism. There is a very fine line between an artist’s freedom and the misuse of such freedom. Many people feel that Husain misused that freedom. Their question is whether he should be allowed to get away with it.
We may debate on the appropriate response to such misuse. In any case, the answer is not violence. However, was it not Husain’s responsibility to make his stand clear? An artist cannot say that he is not concerned with the views of public, many among whom may not understand his artistic interpretations.
Had Husain explained his stand, not as an artist but as an individual who respects others’ freedom to have a contrary view, it might have helped. Perhaps, it is too late now to make amends on both sides. Let Husain live peacefully in Qatar.
