This refers to the debate “Should voters be allowed to recall candidates” (September 7). Even if the challenge of logistics, as pointed out by N Gopalaswamy, is formidable, the mere presence of the recall provision in the statute book would go a long way in ridding our elected representatives of their arrogance and the apathy they display towards voters. The move may act as a deterrent for politicians and ensure accountability and we may not need re-elections after all. For even in countries that have a recall provision (US, Switzerland, Canada, Venezuela), the actual recalls have been few and far between.
