<b>Letters:</b> Reinforcing factor

After the landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the party needed another big win to reinforce its image and influence among the people. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections provided just that.

Being the most populous state in India, UP is important in terms of its electorate. In retrospect, the manner in which the BJP went about making inroads in the state and cutting across the minority vote bank is remarkable. 

The party has created a history of sorts by sidelining the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in the state. The UP victory will set the tone for the BJP to gear up for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
