This refers to the report "Sushma draws flak over demand to make Gita national scripture" (December 10). The raging controversy over the Bhagavad Gita as a national scripture is unwarranted. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's demand that the holy text be declared a national scripture is an affront to the country's secular character. Coming close on the heels of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat's statement that all Indians are Hindus, Swaraj's irreverent remark exposes the narrow thinking on the part of a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who is also a central minister in Narendra Modi's Cabinet.
At a time when the ruling dispensation is expected to perform better as promised, the manner in which an insignificant subject is being mooted as though it's related to the livelihood of people is not only irresponsible, but reeks of religious fanaticism.
