This refers to A K Bhattacharya’s article “The Right to Choose” (July 27). The author has correctly brought out the constraints due to which Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, has not been as effective as he was when he was the finance minister. Given the situation, we should consider afresh the idea of a presidential system with a fixed five-year tenure for the elected president. A presidential system will give much-needed stability to the government and afford the president the freedom to choose unelected experts as his ministers.
