The Bharatiya Janata Party, once known for its levels of discipline, seems to be gradually disintegrating. This is lamentable. The opposition has a critical role to play in any democracy. After the elections, the elevation of some of leaders was not accepted by others, the unceremonious sacking of Jaswant Singh, and the views expressed by Arun Shourie have all further dented the image of the party. The BJP also lost the support of the intelligentsia after the riots in Gujarat.
The BJP should also foster youth and place younger leaders in the forefront. The Congress has wisely positioned youngsters like Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and Milind Deora to refurbish its image. The BJP will also benefit by re-positioning itself a disciplined, no-nonsense, high-delivery party. Washing of dirty linen in public will cripple the party and may even make it redundant.
