'The bucks stop here' (April 11) is a good way to describe the sad state of India’s politics — instead of taking responsibility for running the country (remember US President Truman’s famous ‘The Buck Stops Here’ slogan?), these politicians are just concerned about the wealth they can amass. But what use are these affidavits to the common man? Not much, really. For one, they don’t even reveal the actual state of affairs — only the very naive can believe Rahul Gandhi’s half-share of a 4.6 acre farm in post south-Delhi is worth just Rs 9.86 lakh.
Verifying the authenticity of the data is important, and it is evident no one is doing this. But even more important, there is no explanation as to how the MPs amassed all this wealth — did the BJP MLAs whose assets rose from Rs 133 lakh to Rs 457 lakh between two elections in Karnataka earn this, or did they get it as gifts? Unless these questions are asked, and answered, the exercise of filing affidavits is just a big waste of time.
