This refers to “NHAI clean chit to Gammon, Hyundai in Kota bridge collapse”, December 29. The alacrity with which testimonials are being given to builders, without holding any enquiry, raises doubts. As many as 40 people lost their lives due to the bridge collapse, and so, there should be a technical investigation to fix responsibility.
The performance of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) under the UPA government has been lacklustre, and even a high-profile minister like Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Kamal Nath has not been able to galvanise the premier organisation entrusted with road development into action, and construction targets are way off the mark.
With the Central government backing out on guarantees to the developers, the pace of construction is likely to slow down further.
