N Chandra Mohan’s well-analysed article “Shortages in a labour-surplus economy” (October 24) points to the urgent need for removing the talent-imbalance in our system. The problem of unemployability should be corrected by a more regular and vigorous interaction between the industry, education institutions and the government so as to update the course contents and skill requirements. It should provide for greater on-the-job learning experience. Even ITI courses need to be reviewed—welding skills in technology-driven jobs could be quite different from the traditional ones. Second, quality and contemporary learning should be included as necessary parameters in sanctioning new professional institutes. Finally, the distribution of seats among various disciplines should be reviewed more frequently, in tune with industry’s needs.
