With reference to the editorial, "Another caged parrot?" (May 18), it is high time we considered carving out crime investigation from police functions.
For crime investigation, there could be a separate institution, possibly an independent constitutional authority, along the lines of the Election Commission. Such an institution would be expected to investigate crimes fairly without political pressure or interference.
The police should then be tasked with maintaining law and order and internal security functions. It would then be directly under the control of and answerable to the government of the day.
