A K Bhattacharya’s article “Why Singur is important” (July 13) was an interesting read, especially since it questions whether the Tatas would have moved court had the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid the compensation amount of Rs 1,400 crore. The Tata Group commands a business turnover of around $60 billion with 93 companies under its belt. So for the company, Singur seems more like an issue of prestige than value or money. Had it only been a numbers game, the Tatas would have pulled out long ago when trouble first started brewing. Moreover, will the Tatas be ready to leave Kalinganagar if the Naveen Patnaik government in Orissa is ready to compensate the company on the investments and land?
