The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate is telling voters in his rallies that the Congress has ruined India during the past 60 years through wrong economic policies. He appeals to voters to give the BJP 60 months to build a prosperous India. But he should remember how the Congress has transformed India after independence. I was born before independence and back then there was an acute food shortage and people would eat sub-standard grain. Today, food grains are in plenty despite the increase in population. Education was accessible to only a privileged few, but today our children have a right to education. Communication was worse, but today even remote villages have access to phones and internet. Employment opportunities were rare but the Five Year Plans have contained unemployment within tolerable limits.
