This refers to the edit “More than succession” (November 25) and Shyamal Majumdar’s article “The prince who didn’t want to be king” (November 26). There’s no doubt that Ratan Tata has set a precedent for finding successors in the corporate sector by appointing a search committee instead of making it a closed-door family or board matter. Some may find fault with him for prematurely airing his views about the unsuitability of his step-brother, Noel Tata, for the job, others might question the ethics in choosing a candidate who was a member of the search committee. But these are unfounded since the search committee consisted of eminent people and gave enough time and thought (18 sittings over a year) before the final selection. And it seems to have given more weight to potential than present performance.
