With reference to "Self-driving Tesla involved in fatal crash, say US authorities" (July 2), the car was being tested Tesla claimed it was one fatality in 130 million miles of driving. The figure is remarkable by comparison with accidents involving errant drivers.

While driverless cars could offer many benefits, from aiding the elderly to reducing the number of mishaps, disaster could still strike. Who then pays for the damages - the owner or the manufacturer? We need to prepare ourselves to resolve such legal conundrums and ensure proper guidelines and regulations are in place.

The only way for the driverless technology to succeed is to test it. The promise of 90 per cent reduction in accidents will be fulfilled only when the technology is improved and the great majority of vehicles are driverless.
