United Breweries’ chief Vijay Mallya should be appreciated for his swift and fast action to ensure he won the auction in the US! It is a matter of pride for all Indians that one of us has managed to get back the items belonging to Mahatma Gandhi. Puritans may question the background of Mallya as a liquor baron etc but it is only his timely action that counts today. It is very unfortunate that we give recognition to most things only when foreigners recognise them. The film Gandhi was, after all, made by a Britisher! We are capable of only talking big and doing nothing. At a time when there was a feeling that we may lose Gandhi’s memorabilia, Mallya’s surprise bid ensured the precious items will now find their way back into the country.
