Sanjaya Baru’s column “India, China and the US” (October 10) was incomplete in its analysis. The article fails to address several critical and complicated political issues like emergencies arising out of a failed, nuclear-armed Pakistan; a nuclear-capable Iran; a failed North Korea; environmental issues; the urgency to corner energy and ore resources in West Asia and Africa; and a corruption-riled India.
These issues require immediate home-grown solutions and quick alliances, merely relying on group negotiations that might be long-drawn and inconclusive will not help. Besides China is still grappling with its role on the international arena and has rarely shown responsible ethical politics. Its polity is filled with hawks from years of arrogant communist rule. It is hoped that a pacifist China will arise but that is unlikely to happen as long as state-owned institutions are patronised and allowed political lobbying. Similar is the situation with the US.
