This refers to the editorial "The Lutyens obsession" (November 9). These old buildings, which are engineering marvels that have withstood the test of time, reflect a colonial past observing a dominating "divide-and-rule" policy. Civil servants as policymakers were distanced from the common man by the majestic grandeur of these structures. However, the public role in governance is increasing worldwide today and closed economies of a bygone socialist era have become redundant. Buildings reflect public sentiments and with simplification of procedures for economic activities, greater proximity is expected between the executive and people.

The horizontal expansion of government estates, both residential and official, will not only prevent this but also reduce land space for the growing urban population. It is essential to construct more high-rise structures with modern amenities at different locations to ensure the economical utilisation of land to cater to a growing urban population.

It will ensure a more social environment and closer relationship between policymakers and the public. The renovation of existing old structures and horizontal expansion of government estate will not only waste land area but also lead to wasteful expenditure at the expense of the taxpayer.
