This refers to Ajai Shukla's column "Revive the army's warrior cult" (Broadsword, April 28). While the army has no reservations for recruitment, it appears to have excelled in imbibing the quota cult, so much so that its warrior cult is now suspect. The army's corps virility is being stifled by gross inbreeding and its revival can only be initiated by the defence minister. Just two measures can set the ball rolling. There cannot be more than 25 per cent from any one corps at the level of army commanders. Further, the vice-chief and military secretary cannot be from the same corps as the chief.

It is perhaps a telling effect of the quota system that the only merit-based item left is the entry to the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. The current chief did not make it and yet was able to make it to the top. What better proof of the quota cult?
