Apropos the article, "Cheerful ads" (April 9), the writer T N Ninan says that political parties issue multi-page advertisements in the print media listing their achievements before elections in the respective states. These ads usually exaggerate facts. Ninan has cited the examples of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in this context and confronted state actors with well-researched, relevant data.

Leaders of political parties in the states have not yet realised that the public is no longer carried away by ads; because of TV coverage and better education they are now more aware of what is real and what is fake. But there is no foolproof method for voters to verify the figures cited in such ads. Researchers at universities and institutes could bring out the correct data.

Perhaps, the most effective medium for issuing ads now is digital media, as it reaches a majority of the people, who are internet-savvy and use social media extensively. That's why the Narendra Modi government is using it to publicise its achievements.
