Sanjaya Baru’s column “Remembering Narasimha Rao” (July 4) was an appropriate tribute to P V Narasimha Rao. The Congress party and the nation have much to thank him for. He ran the Congress-led minority government successfully and displayed immense political acumen. Manmohan Singh, as the finance minister, was able to introduce far-reaching economic reforms only because he was fully backed by Rao despite the conservative mindset of his party and the Left parties. These reforms have put India in a commanding position in the global economy today. Whenever an objective history of India’s economic renaissance is written, Rao will surely find a place in it along with Manmohan Singh.
