The outcome of the Bihar Assembly elections will depend not on the performance of individual parties, but on certain negative factors. The prospects of the 'secular' alliance will solely rest on the number of votes the Samajwadi Party, the Nationalist Congress Party and its smaller partners are able to garner. This applies to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and its allies as well.

On the other hand, the Shiv Sena, even with a minuscule presence in the state, may dent the chances of the National Democratic Alliance candidates to an extent.

This apart, there is the problem that all parties are beset with: rebel candidates who may play spoilsport, especially if the election results yield a hung Assembly.
