Apropos Shyamal Majumdar's column "Keep unions out of IT" (Human Factor, January 16), the information technology (IT) sector in India is a force to reckon with because of the absence of unions. This is a unique sector, compared to traditional industries, where one needs to be creative to hone talent constantly. The IT sector can do without unions. Some political parties are trying to get a toe-hold in setting up unions, but the response from employees is not encouraging and it should remain so. Our labour law reforms should begin with banning non-employees in union activities. All employees should get an opportunity to head a union on a rotational basis. Also, when we talk of labour law reforms, we should keep end-users in mind.
