This refers to Vinayak Chatterjee's column "Smart cities need smarter implementation" (Infratalk, June 1). To administer growing urban areas, one needs to attend to issues related to water supply, sanitation, power supply and transportation along with law and order.
India has four decades of planed urban growth from self-administrative experience. Before that, we invited the French architect Le Corbusier and had Chandigarh designed by him, and his assisting Indian team had the chance to work on Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat.
Now, this concept of planning smart cities looks like a type of branding. Either it is organic, like trees and flowers, or man-made, which ultimately becomes a brand. Step 6 mentioned in the column might lead to the stepping stone of future politicians to hang on totally.
Simple implementation and the management of civic governing would give better results to present any city of India than this concept of smart cities. What we need to do is digitise all the information about infrastructure mentioned in the column and make it simple, so that smart gadgets can be in the loop 24x7.
