Instead of fighting letter battles with one another (‘Defence must give DoT 3G spectrum’, November 3), it would be better if Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Communications Minister A Raja told us what the factual position is with respect to the auctions of 3G spectrum.

The finance minister wrote to tell the telecom minister that the 3G auctions needed to be held on time; the telecom minister, in turn, has written to say that the ball is in the finance minister's court since the defence forces are not vacating the necessary spectrum — and since the finance minister heads the Group of Ministers on this, he has to get the defence to surrender the spectrum.

While both ministers may feel happy passing on the buck, we need a roadmap as to when the spectrum will be available since 3G spectrum has become vital for the industry's health.
