In criticising the frequent travels by his colleagues, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has focused on the “austerity” factor, but the time spent on such travels has not been taken into account. Factors such as the time ministers spend on travel and their absence from the Lok Sabha are more important than the issue of expenditure. Also, the ministers’ absence provides the government a quick alibi to avoid embarrassing questions.
