This refers to the editorial “One step forward” (February 22). The government has finally kicked off its most ambitious project. No doubt the UID project is a great effort to improve the process of collecting citizens’ identity details. It will go a long way towards plugging loopholes in the public distribution system and other such schemes. The project will benefit citizens in matters of opening a bank account, applying for a driving licence, passport or visa and so on
Also, fears about the possible theft and misuse of personal details should not be taken seriously. In fact, the UID system will easily curb any duplication or impersonation since it involves biometric attributes like fingerprints and iris scans.
Apart from speeding up the distribution process of issuing UID numbers, effective steps should be taken to create awareness among the people about the importance of the unique system.
