A unique identification (UID) project deserves a unique Group of Ministers (GoM) and so the GoM on the UID is to be chaired by the prime minister himself! If the UID is made mandatory for ration cards, NREGA, and other social sector spending projects, it has the power to cut leakages to zero. It is a sign of the tremendous support the government is giving this project that the prime minister himself is going to ensure there is no opposition from various ministries and that all coordination problems are resolved at the earliest. The fact that the prime minister will chair the GoM also means that no other Cabinet minister will raise frivolous objections.
