This refers to the editorial "A long face-off' (December 21). With diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba resuming after over five decades, the last vestige of the Cold War will disappear from the world stage. This reconciliation seems to be the result of the futility of the US' gunboat diplomacy and the loss of relevance of Cuba's Communist ideology in world politics. What is unusual is that the US thought it was pragmatic to mend fences with the country in its backyard posing no threat to it in any respect. What is more important now is that for an enduring relationship, the US and Cuba need to stop sticking points in their bilateral ties from becoming flashpoints in the future.
