This refers to the edit “A lost decade” (September 14). It has been a horrible decade for the US. The superpower has become a tiny replica of its former self. Economically, it is fragile. Unemployment is near 10 per cent and consumer confidence is low. But one shudders to think of China as the next superpower. Chinese leaders are not too comfortable with Indian leaders, furthermore they consider Pakistan a good friend. On the east, Myanmar and other nations are cosying up to China and so is Sri Lanka in the south. This may not be good news for India, considering Japan and South Korea’s bitter experience with the country. And considering the fact that it is a nation that suppresses its people and opponents to become the next world power. For India, a China that doesn’t listen is certainly going to be more difficult to tackle than a US that hears us out.
