In her article "At work and happy" (BS Weekend, January 31), Veenu Sandhu quotes some useful suggestions, mostly about organisational steps for workplace happiness. When organisational measures are absent or inadequate, what should individuals do themselves to create happiness at their workplace by focusing on two key factors -relationship building with the higher-ups (particularly the immediate boss) and job satisfaction? Instead of getting stressed with the style of leadership or behaviour of the boss, one should make use of his/her strengths and cope with or cash in on their weaknesses - after all, every person is endowed with both.
Secondly, if confronted with a criticising leader, one should evaluate the criticism objectively and, if justified, take corrective actions while overlooking the hurtful style of the senior.
From individuals to happiness economists, happiness is a personal choice and varied in its conceptualisation. Creating workplace happiness, then, is a test for organisations and the people who constitute it.
