The letter by Sujata Gupta (“End of TV soaps?”, March 24) was a bit too early! It questioned the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by saying the ratings of television shows hadn’t gone down as dramatically as one would have imagined, given the rush to buy IPL teams. “Bollywood film earnings take a hit at box office” (March 24) points out that the Hindi film industry has taken a bit of hit already — even if the TV soaps haven’t. Most movies released in the second and third weeks of March have had very low viewerhips, as low as 20 per cent in some cases. The head of Shemaroo Entertainment has been quoted as saying that he expects a drop in revenues by around 30-40 per cent in the IPL months. This is a very large drop, and amazing for a show that has been around for under three years now.
