This refers to Surinder Sud's column "Wealth from wastewater" (Farm View, July 8). The writer has shared a mind-boggling figure for the generation of "dirty" water from tier-2 and tier-1 cities in India. It is an underlying fact that we, the "intelligent" human race, are literally killing Earth. We generate and consume astronomically excessive energy to sustain life. To make it worse, we have become simply oblivious to the huge wastage of "clean" treated water in cities. But the success of the venture, which uses the plant Typha latifolia as a cleansing agent, mentioned by the writer is worth considering. Today, when we are struggling for an alternative source of energy the world over, this particular technology not only offers a viable route for water treatment (an indispensable activity for us), but also addresses the complicated issue of energy conservation.
