Apropos the controversy over Sanjaya Baru's book The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh, one has to say that Baru has only documented what has been known to the public all along. Both domestically and globally, Manmohan Singh has been known to be lacking conviction on any matter and prepared to sail along with the views of his powerful leader in the party. There were two occasions when Singh could have asserted himself to disprove the perception that he was a sheep in lion's skin. The first was when Jairam Ramesh ridiculed him on the eve of his departure for Brazil to sign an economic co-operation treaty. Singh could have advised the president to drop Ramesh from the Cabinet. The second occasion was when Rahul Gandhi slammed the Ordinance on convicted lawmakers, calling it a "complete nonsense". He could have condemned Gandhi for the indiscipline. Singh has financial security of the highest order and need not have worried about losing his job. There is now an urgent need to restore dignity and importance to the post of the prime minister and it seems that Narendra Modi could do it.
