On Wednesday, the Supreme Court directed that cinema halls across the country must play the National Anthem before the screening of a film and people should stand up as a mark of respect. It also said the National Flag should be shown on screen when the Anthem was played. The Supreme Court order was made in the afternoon. By evening, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a tad disappointed that none had questioned the order, particularly from among those who had questioned the hanging of terrorist Yakub Memon for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bombings or even the alleged fake encounter of undertrials in Madhya Pradesh in October. The BJP is hoping that voices of dissent would give the party an opportunity to showcase its plank of nationalism and discredit, yet again, the “left liberal intellectuals” in the public eye.
