Heavyweight ministers like Pranab Mukherjee and Mamata Banerjee already have their hands full. But they will now have to perform another duty. The rural development ministry is reconstituting its monitoring committees to oversee the implementation of the rural employment programme in each district — prominent MPs of each district have been made the conveners of these committees. Banerjee, who is from Kolkata, has been given the charge of an adjacent rural district. The question is whether people like her and Mukherjee, who already have their work cut out, will have the time to monitor the the employment programme.
