The Congress Parliamentary Party now has a new Chief Whip: Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh, Girija Vyas. Vyas was a junior minister in the Narasimha Rao government and was abruptly removed. Since then, her fortunes had dipped until she was appointed as chief of the National Commission for Women. She is a popular figure — a PhD in philosophy whose doctoral dissertation was on a comparative study of ethical teachings in the Gita and the Bible. No doubt she will find her PhD useful in her new role.
