Till recently, the United Progressive Alliance liked to claim the Right to Information (RTI) as a signal success story of its first term. Now, with embarrassing secrets tumbling out of the closet thanks to RTI claims (the latest being the Pranab-Chidambaram contretemps), the Congress is rethinking its stance. Shying away from officially calling for the dilution of the RTI, the Congress has now started “welcoming the vigorous and invigorating debate around the efficacy of the RTI”. Opening sarkari files for the aam aadmi wasn’t such a good idea, after all.
