Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was not a noticeable proponent of bio-fuels during her long years in office but the political influence of her family is certainly long-lived. This was well in evidence at a conference organised by the Biodiesel Association of India in New Delhi on November 19. The topic was “Biofuels for Sustainable Rural Livelihood and Energy Security” but the banner behind the stage bore a large photo of Mrs Gandhi, whose birth anniversary fell on the same day. The Biodiesel Association of India describes itself as a “non-profit association” but some of its members are key government-owned oil companies.
