The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) have upped the ante in the run-up to the elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on April 18 and about 90 municipal bodies across West Bengal on April 25. The BJP warned of widespread violence by TMC ahead of the civic polls after actress Rupa Ganguly, who joined the BJP recently, was allegedly attacked near Gopalnagar in South 24 Parganas by TMC activists while she was campaigning for the BJP candidates contesting the KMC elections. On her part, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that Opposition party members had been abusing her on television every day. "Let them remain on television channels and I will remain in the hearts of the masses," she said.
