Ever since coming to power in May 2014, the Narendra Modi government seems to have carried forward an agenda of interfering in academic matters and filling up academic posts with its loyalists. Right from the National Book Trust to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and from the institutions of higher education to various cultural institutions, loyalists of the government have been appointed.
Eminent individuals such as Anil Kakodkar and Amartya Sen have been shown the door. Now, Nalanda University Chancellor George Yeo has resigned, citing government interference. This is not a good sign. The autonomy of educational institutions should be respected by the government.
