Kanimozhi, who was asked to appear in person in the ongoing Supreme Court hearings in the 2G spectrum scam (her appeal for exemption was turned down), was allowed to travel to Chennai for two days, supposedly citing an income tax case. It is quite a coincidence that the minister of state in the finance ministry is from Kanimozhi’s party. There is nothing unusual about getting an income tax notice; what is unusual is that it should come just at the time when Kanimozhi needed to be in Chennai to deal with her family and put things in place before the Assembly election verdict. Income tax notices don’t arrive suddenly and demand your presence in 24 hours. They usually give appellants time and in any case, do not demand your personal presence. So this is one notice Kanimozhi might actually have wished for!
