The computerised processing of income tax returns has ensured quick refunds — often within a few months after they are filed.
The flip side of digitisation is that many others have received income tax notices for tax dues of even Rs 200 and Rs 300.
Income tax department officials say they have to send notices for any sum due above Rs 100. This stricture was mostly ignored when the system of manual filing was in place, but with computerised processing it is no longer possible to do so.
The thought doing the rounds in the department is to raise the limit to at least Rs 500 to reduce headaches for honest taxpayers.
