There was great drama in Alipore court, Kolkata, on Monday when lawyers representing minister Madan Mitra tried to stop additional chief judicial magistrate Haradhan Mukhopadhyay from taking cognisance of a section against the minister in a Saradha case. Without that particular IPC section (409), Mitra could not be kept in custody for more than 60 days, that is, beyond Tuesday without being chargesheeted. Inclusion of that section would increase the time to 90 days. The judge held his ground and included the section nonetheless. Interestingly, the omission of this section had helped Trinamool MP Srinjoy Bose secure bail in the same case last week.
