When Mamata Banerjee left the railway ministry for the chief minister’s chair in West Bengal there was hectic lobbying within the Trinamool Congress to bag the vacant minister-ship. So much so that a Trinamool minister of state unleashed a campaign against a colleague for almost two months by spreading a rumour that he suffered severe back problems and, therefore, couldn’t be active in the ministry. When the other minister heard the rumour he not only told Banerjee about this “conspiracy” but also had a check-up at a reputed Delhi hospital to show he is as fit as a fiddle.
