Disgraced Bihar Intermediate examination topper Ruby Rai, who has admitted that her father paid bribes to get her passed, has attracted sympathy from many, including some Opposition leaders in the state. A Bharatiya Janata Party leader said Rai, now in judicial custody, was a victim and not the conspirator.

"The police should have arrested her parents, not her," he said. "But as the focus is on her, no one will take her side." Quite expectedly, a political tug of war has started over the Bihar Board exam scam.

While Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das has invited students from Bihar to come to his state to pursue their education, a Janata Dal-United spokesperson said: "The state of education in Jharkhand is no better. But the scam has put us on the back foot." According to the spokesperson, Das is angry with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for his anti-liquor campaign in the state, "so he is hitting back now".
