At the National Convention for Workers, major trade unions tried their best to keep aside their differences so that they could form a common front to take on issues vital to the labour movement. To start with, no trade unions allowed their followers to flaunt their own flags inside Mavalankar Hall, the venue of the convention.
AITUC’s Amarjeet Kaur was alert on stage and whenever any trade union raised its own slogan, Kaur promptly took the microphone and shouted, “Mazdoor ekta zindabad” — all unions were then forced to join in chanting of the universal slogan for workers. AITUC’s Gurudas Dasgupta repeatedly said that there was an urgent need for unions to set aside their political differences and to fight in a united manner.
