Rs 1 lakh insurance cover for Rs 4

Farmers in Chhattisgarh will get a life insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh at a premium of just Rs 4 under the farmer insurance security scheme planned by the state government. Besides death, disability and losing vision, farmers dying from snakebite or slipping into the pond would also be entitled to get the insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh. The state government had planned to launch the scheme from April 1, 2009.

“The state-run Chhattisgarh State Agriculture Marketing Board and the United India Insurance Company had sealed a pact to implement the scheme,” Chief minister Raman Singh said. Under the scheme, about 3,00,000 farmers—who come to the mandi for selling their produce, would stand to benefit." Farmers would be entitled to get an insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh each at a premium of Rs 21 per annum. They would be required to pay just 20 per cent of the premium, which is around Rs 4.20.
