The anti-graft helpline instituted by the city’s new government almost had its first victim on Friday. However, before the police could get to him, the accused — an assistant registrar of co-operative societies — managed to get away. “Today, we caught a staffer taking a bribe on behalf of an Assistant Registrar…Although he ran away, there is sufficient proof against him and the officer will be arrested soon,” said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The government had got 23,181 phone calls on its anti-corruption line, 1031, till Thursday, he told reporters.
He said a trap was laid on another accused but the person denied taking a bribe.
The Aam Aadmi Party government had announced a citizen helpline on Thursday to deal with corruption and urged people to conduct ‘sting’ operations on government officials whom they suspected. Kejriwal added as m,any as 16 cases of ‘sting’ operations were ready for investigation, to take place from Monday. “I hope these officials mend their ways till an inspector reaches them,” he said, adding the phone lines were getting blocked due to the huge number of calls.
“We are (also) receiving a lot of cases with grievances, not related to corruption cases; hence, the lines are getting jammed,” said the CM.
