The 2020 Asian American Voter Survey data, which polled 1,569 Asian American registered voters, of whom 260 were Asian Indians, reported that no major party in the US contacted them ahead of the 2020 presidential elections. Though the sample size of survey is small, it still suggests among Asian Indian voters, Democrat candidate Joe Biden has a definite edge.

At a rally funded by Asian Indians at Houston in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led President Donald Trump by the hand and had announced: ‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkar’. Judging by the survey, notwithstanding the small sample size, it doesn’t look as if that call is going to yield the desired result.

“Asian Americans saw a record high level of mid-term election turnout in 2018,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, professor of public policy founder and director of AAPI Data, adding, “with a majority saying that they are even more enthusiastic than usual about this election suggests that we will see record turnout for Asian Americans for a presidential election in 2020.”

The data collected on the most important issues in the election for Asian Indian voters suggests jobs and the economy is the single most important issue for 53 per cent Asian Indians. As many as 60 per cent believe health care is most important; 59 per cent believe education is extremely important. And 54 per cent believe the Democrats have better policies on immigration while only 23 per cent believe the Republicans are better. Around 18 per cent say there is no difference between the two.
