Governor K N Tripathi has invited senior Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar to form new government in the state. Rebel JD-U leader and outgoing Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi earlier resigned after he failed to garner support in the state assembly.
Kumar would be administered oath of office tomorrow and is expected to be given a week to prove majority in the assembly. Earlier today Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi resigned just before presenting the confidence motion in the state assembly.
Manjhi later claimed that he resigned because there were threats on his and his supporters’ life.
“We have been getting threatening calls. The speaker also acted in partisan manner. If the governor has allowed secret ballot, we would have got the numbers. The seating arraignment also omitted several of our supporting MLAs. However, to save life and honour of our legislators, I decided to resign,” said Manjhi in a hurriedly called press conference.

Meanwhile, Kumar described his decision to quit office last year as “a mistake” and asked for forgiveness from people. “With folded hands, I apologise to people of Bihar. Never again I will take such a step. I am ready to lead from the front.” Kumar’s contrition echoes the apology issued by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while he was campaigning for Delhi’s election.
“Manjhi should have resigned if he did not want to face the house. We have already requested to governor that trust vote should have been taken before Budget session,” he said. He blamed the BJP for this instability. “They tried to buy votes, but failed to garner votes. BJP brought the state on the brink of chaos,” told the former chief minister.
Meanwhile, Manjhi supporters are also startled by his resignation. “We had the number till last night. I don’t what transpired last night, but we didn’t have a clue that he was going to resign,” said rebel JD-U legislator Rajiv Ranjan. Even the move made BJP uncomfortable.
“We thought he would put a fight even if he had to resign,” said one of BJP legislator.
